What Types of Injuries Are Athletes Prone To?

Athletes suffer many types of injuries, depending upon the sport they prefer to play. The most common of these injuries include:

• Sprains: A sprain is an injury in which a ligament is twisted severely enough to cause swelling and discomfort. Sprains frequently occur in the wrists and the ankles.

• Strains: A strain is a stretching injury that often involves a muscle or tendon tear. The lower back and hamstring muscles are common strain sites.

Initially, the therapist may watch the athlete closely during a warm-up to identify if any of the athlete’s muscles are weak or if the athlete is habitually moving in ways that might make him or her more prone to injury. Then the therapist will recommend specific exercises, stretches and techniques that will help rectify the issue he or she identified.
